If you’re a regular reader of my newsletter, then I will assume you are at least mildly interested in politics.
As such, you may have heard that earlier today a new Speaker of the House (SH) was elected — representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana is this nation’s new Speaker.
That’s right folks, this latest “crisis in Democracy” has finally been averted with relatively little fanfare.
I know we all felt the heavy impact of not having a House Speaker these past weeks. Everyday felt like it might be the last day for Democracy.
There’s no doubt that the Speaker of The House is one of the foremost concerns of the everyday American — it’s a miracle our country has survived this long without one.
Well we can finally put those fears to rest because Rep. Johnson is on the job!
Just…. who is Mike Johnson? And more importantly, is he an upgrade from McCarthy?
Well, let’s find out.
The Short Answer
The short answer is — probably. Mike Johnson is probably going to be a slight improvement from McCarthy, but not by much.
At least with respect to his voting behavior, he tends to vote more conservatively than McCarthy. Politically, it’s hard to see how Johnson will appeal as well to Democrats as McCarthy, and it’s even harder to see how Johnson will fundraise like McCarthy.
The 51-year-old representative from Louisiana’s 4th district worked as a constitutional lawyer for 20 years, and has been in Congress since 2016.
The Longer Answer
To better understand who Mike Johnson is, and whether he will be a better Speaker for the conservative party, let’s review some of his voting behavior since 2016.
